For many youth experiencing homelessness, attending college can be more than an educational opportunity- it may be their first experience having stable housing, consistent meals, and a supportive community. When presented with the opportunity to attend college or pursue further education, some students may even question whether they deserve the chance.
At SHIP of Frederick County, we help students recognize that their circumstances do not define their potential. Our team works alongside each student to identify their goals, explore their options, and develop a pathway that reflects their individual strengths, interests, and vision for the future.
What ages does College Horizons serve?
College Horizons serves students from the beginning of their senior year of high school through their first semester of college. During this important transition, SHIP provides continued guidance and support as students navigate the next step in their educational journey.
How Does SHIP Help?
Our team provides individualized support to help each student identify and pursue the educational pathway that is right for them.
College Horizons helps students:
- Explore their options – Work with students to determine whether college, university, trade school, vocational training, or another educational pathway aligns with their goals.
- Identify short- and long-term goals – Help students define what they want for their educational, career, and personal future.
- Navigate applications – Assist students with completing and reviewing college, university, trade, and training program applications.
- Navigate FAFSA and financial aid – Help students review their FAFSA and financial aid information, ensuring required information is completed accurately, and necessary steps are addressed.
- Plan for the transition to college – Help students prepare for the practical and personal transition from high school to postsecondary education.
- Provide continued support – Remain connected with students through their first semester of college to help them navigate challenges and stay focused on their goals.
- Center the student’s choice – There is no single “right” pathway. SHIP supports students in choosing the educational or career path that best fits their strengths, interests, goals, and future.
